One of the fastest ways to misunderstand the Bible is to read it in pieces small enough to mean anything you want.
Read whole books, not fragments. Every book of the Bible was written by someone, to someone, for a reason, and the argument is what makes the verses hold still.
A single line lifted out of its paragraph can be made to say almost anything. We have all seen it done, sometimes by people who meant well. The correction is simple and it is not complicated theology. Read whole books.
Every book of the Bible was written by someone, to someone, for a reason. Philippians is a thank you letter with a prison return address. Galatians is written hot, to a church going sideways. Ruth is a short story about famine, loyalty, and an unlikely redemption that turns out to matter enormously later.
When you read a whole book in one or two sittings, you get the argument. You see where the author is going, what he keeps repeating, what he is answering. And once you have the argument, individual verses land in the place they were meant to land.
Try this. Pick a short book, Philippians or 1 John or Ruth, and read it start to finish in one sitting. It takes about fifteen minutes. Then read it again the next day. By the third reading you will start seeing structure you completely missed the first time.
2 Timothy 3:16 says all Scripture is God breathed and profitable. All of it. Which means the parts that look like connective tissue, the genealogies, the travel notes, the greetings, are doing work too.
Read the book. Then the verse will hold still and mean what it says.
