How to Pray Scripture Back to God

When you do not know what to say, the Bible will hand you the words. This is one of the oldest practices in the faith and one of the most immediately useful.

When you do not know what to say, pray the passage back to God. It solves the blank page, corrects what you ask for, and teaches you the text.

The method is simple. You read a passage, and instead of moving on, you turn it into address. You say it back.

Take Psalm 23. Instead of reading the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, you pray, You are my shepherd. I am not going to lack. You are making me lie down, and I have been refusing to. Restore my soul, because it is worn thin.

Take Ephesians 3, where Paul prays that a church would be strengthened with might by the Spirit in the inner man, rooted and grounded in love. Pray that for your kids. By name. That is a prayer already approved by God, and you are simply putting the right names into it.

Three reasons this works so well.

It solves the blank page. Most people stop praying not from unbelief but from having nothing to say by minute two. Scripture ends that.

It corrects what you ask for. Left alone, our prayers shrink toward comfort and logistics. Praying the Bible stretches them back toward what God actually cares about.

It teaches you the passage. You will remember a verse you have prayed far longer than one you have read.

Start with the Psalms. They were written to be prayed, they cover the whole emotional range, and they are honest in a way that gives you permission to be honest too.
